Woo Hoo! I love warm weather season.

There is almost nothing better than taking a long walk with my dogs in the green woods of Pennsylvania during the summer months. When we get home from those walks, my pups REALLY enjoy these DIY Dog Ice Cream Recipes.

With all the glories of summer and warm weather months, it’s important to make sure that your dog stays both tick free and cool and healthy. One of the ways to do that is with a DIY dog pool. They’re easy to build and will help keep your pup cooled down.

Keeping Your Pup Cool in the Summer

Dogs don’t sweat like humans in order to regulate their body temperature. They pant instead. Panting works great, but it’s important to make sure that they have plenty of fresh water and most dogs also LOVE frozen treats, which can help them stay cool and comfortable in hot weather.

As the summer gets hotter, this recipe for a homemade version of Frosty Paws – and it’s variations – will really come in handy!

As humans we love to sit with our ice cream cones and see if we can both savor it, and never lose a drip at the same time.

But our pups shouldn’t have traditional human ice cream. It’s too high in sugar for them.

DIY Dog Ice Cream Recipes

One of the things I love about these recipes is that they don’t have a lot of added sugar. They’re sweetened with fruit instead. And if these three recipes aren’t enough for you – I also have 13 homemade frozen dog treat recipes here.

NOTE: If you really want to keep the sugar levels down then use the plain yogurt instead of the vanilla flavored.

Homemade Frosty Paws – Traditional Version

Variation 1 – DIY Blueberry Dog Ice Cream

This is a variation on the theme and is super easy. Simply substitute the bananas for 1 cup of mashed blueberries (mashed from frozen works fine). Surprisingly blueberries and peanut butter go well together.

Variation 2 – DIY Sweet Potato Dog Ice Cream

This variation works in much the same way as the blueberry variation. You simply substitute 1 cup of cooked and mashed sweet potatoes for the bananas in the original recipe.

These three variations of homemade cold treats for dogs will give you plenty of ways to prep out yummy dog treats for the summer.

And you don’t have to worry that you’re loading them up with sugar! So that’s a huge plus!

Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream Cones?

We have covered why you shouldn’t feed your dog sugary human ice cream, but what about the cone itself? We often don’t think of an ice cream cone containing a sweetner, however ice cream cones often contain xylitol as a sweetener which is toxic to dogs. If you are unsure whether or not your ice cream cone contains xylitol, it is best not to give it to your dog.

The Bottom Line on Summer Treat Recipes for Dogs

When you’re looking for summer treats for dogs, especially frozen treats, their are a couple of things to keep in mind.

First, remember that chocolate and grapes are toxic to dogs, so avoid those as ingredients.

Second, if the treat is sweetened it’s much better if it’s sweetened with real fruit rather than with added sugar. Dogs don’t need the added sugar and it’s not good for them.

Last, make sure that treats are a small part of your dogs diet. Most of their diet should be made up of high quality commercial or homemade dog food.
