Britannia on Coins
Britannia has been a feature on British coinage since 1672, with silver Britannia coins introduced in 1997. They were originally issued in .958 Britannia silver, with the fineness changing to .999 fine silver in 2013.
Obverse
Designed by Martin Jennings, the obverse features a portrait of HM King Charles III. The legend reads:
CHARLES III· D· G· REX· F· D· 2 POUNDS· 2023·
Reverse
Jonathan Olliffe designed the new reverse of the 2023 proof Britannia range. The design is inspired by eighteenth-century medals depicting Britannia driving a sea chariot pulled by horses, and features a unique combination of aquatic and serpent-inspired creatures with traditional equine figures.
The text reads:
BRITANNIA· 1 OZ 999 FINE SILVER 2023
