Is a 2000 D Sacagawea dollar worth anything? ›

2000 D Sacagawea Coin Value

According to the NGC Price Guide, as of September 2024, a Sacagawea Coin from 2000 in circulated condition is worth between $1.05 and $1.35. However, on the open market 2000 D Dollars in pristine, uncirculated condition sell for as much as $100.

The 2000 Sacagawea dollar – Washington quarter mule is an error coin featuring the obverse of a Washington quarter (specifically a 50 State quarter) and the reverse of a Sacagawea dollar struck on a gold-colored dollar coin planchet.

In many respects, the Sacagawea dollar is a rare coin. The fact that it features a woman, alone, makes it one of very few such coins in the United States. However, the Sacagawea dollar coin is also rare because of its scarcity. Only 71 billion Sacagawea coins have been minted, and this is far fewer than other coins.

The Cheerios Sacagawea Coin

These "Cheerios" dollars feature a more detailed tail feather design on the eagle's back, making them highly desirable to collectors. There are about 60 to 70 of these coins in existence. Their value ranges from $5,000 to $25,000 or more.

Most collectors consider these rare coins, which quickly gained the moniker Cheerios Dollars, pattern coins. They're generally distinguishable from standard Sacagawea Dollars by the enhanced eagle tail feathers on the reverse (see photo.)

However, given the large number of 2000-P dollars still in rolls, it is certainly not impossible that others could still be in hiding. These error coins usually sell for around $100,000 when they are sold through major auctions like Stacks Bowers. We are of course interested buyers.

After about 2008 for reasons best known to themselves the US mint removed the date from its usual place on the front of the coin. The mark showing which particular location it was mint was removed too - but you can still probably find both the date and mint mark if you look carefully at the edge of the coin.

The types of mint flaws DeLorey was searching for included planchet errors (mishandled preparation of “blank” coins), die errors (where lettering, numbers and images are misprinted on either side of the coin) and strike errors (uneven printing or wrong sized planchet pressing, to name a few commonplace ones).

2000 D Virginia Quarter, Double Struck and Struck Off-Center

That was the case for one Virginia quarter, struck in Denver in 2000. It was not ejected as it should have been after striking, and was struck a second time. The second strike was also off-center, creating a very strange-looking coin.

To ensure your coin is rare, check for minting errors, such as double strikes or planchet flaws, unique designs, or limited editions. The 2007 Sacagawea Dollar, with Edge Lettering, accidentally featuring a Presidential coin's edge design, is exceptionally valuable due to its rarity, with only one known to exist.
