Are 1964-D quarters worth anything? ›

Circulated 1964-D quarters, in average condition, are worth around $6 (USD), while those in pristine condition and higher grades can command hundreds to thousands of dollars, according to PCGS.

1964 Washington Quarter Value

According to the NGC Price Guide, as of September 2024, a Washington Quarter from 1964 in circulated condition is worth between $6 and $8.50. However, on the open market 1964 Quarters in pristine, uncirculated condition sell for as much as $6700.

The special finish for the 1964 SMS Washington Quarter is characterized by a nice, smooth, satin-like finish. The fields are usually well struck, very clean and tend to come without any major nicks or scratches. The edges for most 1964 SMS coins also tend to be square and sharp.

The 1964 Washington Quarter has 5.625 grams or about one-fifth of a troy ounce of silver. Their composition was 90% silver and 10% copper, with copper used to strengthen the coin.

1964-D Quarter with 1965 Reverse

This mint mistake happens when the dies get mixed up, especially in transitional years. 1965 saw the switch from silver quarters to clad cupronickel ones, so some 1964 obverses were struck with 1965 reverses. This example in MS AU 58 sold for $140.

Uncirculated state quarters include those that were minted to be circulated but instead were preserved by collectors or unused. This left these pieces in perfect condition and worth a slightly higher value than circulated coins. As previously mentioned, the uncirculated versions typically are worth about $1.25.

The 1964 quarter is unique because it is one of the last quarters ever minted with 90% silver content. This coin has a diameter of 24.3 millimeters and weighs approximately 6.25 grams.

In 1965, quarter production changed to a clad composition planchet made of copper and nickel. However, a few (the exact number is unknown) were struck on a silver planchet instead. Silver 1965 quarters are worth over $7,000 because they were made by mistake!
