Do Jamie and Claire ever die? ›

After all this befalling our favorite characters it was somewhat of a relief when Claire and Jamie survived to the end of Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone.

As revealed in a 2014 interview on the Outlander Podcast, Diana Gabaldon shared that Jamie is approximately 25 years old when he passes away, corresponding to the age of the ghost. Despite Jamie's numerous brushes with death throughout the series, his ultimate fate is a significant aspect of the Outlander narrative.

Both Claire and John are grief-stricken over Jamie's death. Only hours later, John encounters Captain Richardson, who tells him that he intends to arrest Claire for espionage. John returns to the printshop at once and insists Claire marry him for protection.

After Jamie is very much not killed at the Battles of Saratoga, he, Claire, and Ian all make it to Scotland safe and well, where they become deeply involved with family matters at Lallybroch. Claire is convinced to return to America when Marsali's son Henri-Christian becomes gravely ill, but Jamie stays in Scotland.

Normally, we would laugh this sort of question off. Of course Jamie doesn't die! He's Jamie and this is Outlander! However we're a little nervous about how Outlander Season 7 Episode 7 “A Practical Guide for Time-Travelers” ends.

Meanwhile Jamie himself is not able to time travel, a fact which has prompted much of the show's most heartbreaking drama. (When Frank briefly sees Jamie in the 1940s? That, according to Gabaldon, is his ghost, not his time-traveling corporeal self.)

Some think Jamie's spirit (but not his body) traveled to through time to guide Claire to him; others suggest Jamie had a near-death experience after the Battle of Culloden, and that's why his ghost is 25 when he appears to Frank.

Despite being his savior many times, Claire has trouble saving Jaime's leg after a snake bites him. But when he nearly dies in his sleep, Claire revives Jaime with a sexual act.

In the episode, a dysentery epidemic has spread across the Ridge. While attending a funeral for those who've already succumbed to the sickness, Jamie (Sam Heughan) tells Claire she doesn't look so well herself.

But DG, the author, herself has confirmed that Jamie does not have "the gene" and therefore can't travel. My personal theory here is that Jamie finds Claire in the future during an NDE. He's been seeing visions of the future in his dreams, so if he has an NDE, I could see his spirit finding Claire during that time.

But after that cliffhanger, in this week's episode, "Death Be Not Proud," it's revealed that while the house burned to the ground, Jamie and Claire made it out just in time. And indeed, it was actors Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe leaping to escape the flames on screen.

If you're up to date on the series, then you know that Jamie is not dead at the age of 25. In fact he lives far beyond it, so Gabaldon's revelation here has, of course, sparked numerous theories in the Outlander community.

Obviously, Roger doesn't fulfill Jamie's dying wish—since Jamie doesn't actually die—but he ends the episode by telling Jamie he'll help find and kill Bonnet.
