10 Most Affordable Places to Retire in 2024 - Bankers Life Blog (2024)

More than 40% of non-retired investors plan on moving to a different city or region in retirement. There are many reasons why someone may want to relocate for retirement, but affordability seems to be driving the trend, with people citing lower living costs (44%) and lower taxes (34%) as reasons they plan to move.

Relocating to a city with a lower cost of living is a great way to improve your financial outlook in retirement—especially in today’s economic climate of high inflation. By selling a home in an expensive city and moving somewhere with more reasonable housing and living costs, you may be able to retire sooner, increase your nest egg, lower your required monthly retirement income, or enjoy a higher quality of life.

So, where should you relocate in order to enjoy an affordable yet fulfilling retirement? U.S. News considered housing affordability, happiness, desirability, retiree taxes, the job market, and access to quality health care data and compiled this list of the best, most affordable places to retire in 2024:

1. Youngstown, Ohio

This northeastern Ohio city is within about an hour’s drive of both Pittsburg and Cleveland. Home to Youngstown State University, the area’s largest employer, Youngstown offers retirees parks, golfing, performing arts, a bustling downtown with restaurants and shopping, and affordable housing.
